Wow!What a great turnout for the January Meeting at the National Electronics Museum, which houses the electronic marvels that have helped to shape our country and our world! During the social hour and dinner, many new members and prospective members had the opportunity to visit the museum and learn about our Chapter.
Our speaker was John L. Bergbower, Senior Director of Corporate Security, Parking and Transportation Services for the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and Health System. John gave a presentation on the shooting incident, which occurred there in September 2010, when the son of a patient brought a gun into his mother’s room and killed her, her Doctor, and himself. As a result of this event, new procedures were implemented on campus.
New procedures include:
More collaboration and interaction between departments regarding security and safety measures.
A decrease in the number of entrances from 20 to 12, into and out of the main hospital.
Metal detectors were added, through which all visitors and employees must pass.
Floor plans for each building are now easily accessible at all security guard stations.
Quick communication of instructions in emergency situations can be sent via Email blast to all employees.
John Hopkins Corporate Security team holds monthly meetings with local authorities.
IFMA Chesapeake Chapter President, Connie Miller gave a rundown of upcoming events, and Membership Chairman Ginny Bradford gave a short presentation on the benefits of membership.
