Member Spotlight on Cindy Burke-Gies
* How would you describe your job?
I manage multiple office interior renovations. Determine scope of work with management input. Implement productive space solutions while staying within budget and schedule.
* How did you get started in facilities management?
In my drafting class in high school, a designer visited our class and explained the process of completing a restaurant project. This inspired me to go to Syracuse University to study Environmental Design/ Interiors.
* What is one of your favorite parts of the job?
I like creating new spaces that are professional and functional with a nice color scheme!
* What is one of your least favorite parts of the job?
Sometimes I leave work after 5 PM due to the amount of projects in construction.
* Explain a benefit you've appreciated as an IFMA member?
As an active IFMA member, I interact with more professionals and vendors. I learn something new about facilities at every local meeting, and it helps me stay current on the trends and FM topics.
* Is there any advice you could provide a young FM? Or what do you wish you knew when you first started?
Find a mentor as soon as you get into the industry. Call them when you have a question or idea to get their input. Also, attend as many meetings as possible to absorb more knowledge on our profession.
* Discuss a best practice that makes your job easier.
For every construction meeting, I email the designers, general contractor, cabling/IT, facilities/maintenance, landlord, security, and movers the meeting minutes. Always include progress pictures and copy your upper management on weekly or bi-weekly reports.
* What question would you like us to ask the next FM that we interview?
“Do you have any personal stories to share about your past experiences?” I was an IFMA Richmond Chapter member from 2005-2008. Then, JLL transferred me to Owings Mills for the CareFirst account. I have been a member of the Chesapeake Chapter for eight years, and I feel that the quality of the meeting topics are excellent. Getting involved on our membership services committee has been a good move for me, since I am able to meet more members by volunteering for our chapter. Please consider joining a committee to learn more about our great chapter!
How the World's Largest Building Materials Manufacturer Used Its Own Products to Create a World-Class Headquarters
for Its Employees (from ArchDaily)
Saint-Gobain’s new corporate headquarters campus in Malvern, PA—the North American home to the world’s largest building materials company—is not a typical corporate campus. As the company approached its 350th anniversary, they set out to build a headquarters that would offer a dynamic showcase for its products. The company assembled a team of designers from two firms--Bernardon and Jacobs—to transform a long-dormant site consisting of two office buildings into an integrated, world-class headquarters located in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
